According to information available from International Organization for Migrations, the number of victims of trafficking in human beings is reaching alarming levels, while the results from prosecution of such cases are dissappointing. Since 1999, approximately 800 victims of human trafficking found refuge with the IOM B&H. In addition to being saved from their slavery, the victims need legal protection, says Regina Boucault, Head of IOM Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The man who has been called "the Butcher of Bosnia" and "one of the world's most wanted men" is rumored to be close to arrest in Serbia. The Advocacy project, which works to support the widows of the Srebrenica genocide, offers insight into what happened ten years ago and what the town is like today.

Jasminka Dzumhur, National Human Rights Officer with UN High Commission for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2001, works in Sarajevo and shares her time between Sarajevo and Zenica. For years, she had been active in one of the oldest and strongest women NGOs in B&H, Medika from Zenica, and later with the Centre for Legal Assistance for Women, also in Zenica. Human rights, and women human rights in particular, have been her main area of interest for over 11 years.

“Grbavica”, a long feature film directed by young Bosnian directress Jasmila Zbanic, won the “Golden Bear” Award for best film at the Berlin Film Festival. Zbanic will arrive to Sarajevo today, while the Obala Art Centre and “Deblokada” Production Company announced great festivities “adequate to the success of the film”.

Yesterday was the V-Day, marked by women human rights activists all over the world with public protests and opposition to violence. Public campaign are implemented in all parts of the world, as part of the global V-Day Movement, initiated by Eve Ensler, soon after the publication of her Vagina Monologues (the book is available in Sarajevo bookstores).

UNDP Rights-based Municipal Development Programme, RMAP_2006 started with implementation process in 7 municipalities. In this year RMAP_2006 will implement specific priority projects, which satisfy the set criteria including the human rights criteria, from action plans within the municipal development strategies.

The opening of the “Light” Project by Giorgio Adrrotta, young Italian artist, will mark the official opening of the Sarajevo Winter festival tomorrow in Sarajevo. The project will be presented on the face of the Parliament Building on Marijin Dvor.

The Economic Policy Research Unit (EPRU) of the Council of Ministers of BiH, with financial support provided by the European Commission, seeks to assign grants of up to KM 8000 to individual researchers or teams of researchers. To be eligible, applicants need to be BiH citizens and have a university degree in economics (or be pursuing a PhD program in economics).

More then one half of B&H citizens remain dissatisfied with the healthcare and health insurance system in the country. The dissatisfaction is greater with the citizens of the Republic of Srpska than with the citizens of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Federation. Four in five citizens (83%) consider themselves to be of good health, while 17% believes to be of bad health.

Young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina rarely initiate actions presenting their opinion and pointing out their problems to the public. With the support of the non-governmental sector and certain international organisations, some groups do manage to send messages to BiH politicians on behalf of their generation, and seek answers to their questions.

The Thanks for Asking How I Feel, a book prepared by the activists of the Helsinki CitizensÂ’ Assembly Banja Luka on the occation fo the 10th Annyversary of the Dayton Agreement and reestablishment of peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was promoted in Sarajevo, at the Alumni Association of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies (ACIPS).

Last Saturday, 28 February, the third “Food-Not Bombs!” action was organized at the Bosnia and Herzegovina Square in Sarajevo. The action was organized by the Sarajevo collective “food-not bombs!, with the goal to support the informal citizen group that has been gathering as of December 2005 in front of the Square of the earlier BH Parliament, and in order to simply discuss and publicly talk about the problems that bear a heavy weight on the majority of the Bosnia and Herzegovina citizens, female, male, and all others as well.
