The Centre for Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies CIPS of the University of Sarajevo, opens the competition for entrolment into the first generation of "Gender Studies" Interdisciplinary Graduate Programme. The deadline for application expires on September 15, 2006 for B&H citizens, and foreign students may apply until July 7, 2006.

According to the Denied a Future? 2001-2006: The Right to Education for Roma Children in B&H survey, published by Save the Children UK in April 2006, there are still Roma communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina in which not a single child is included in the elementary education.

The NINA news agency reported last week that the four biggest B&H humanitarian organizations: Merhamet, Caritas, La Benevolencia and Dobrotvor, demanded again that humanitarian organizations are exhempt from the obligation to pay Value Added Tax (VAT).

After the successful lecture by professor Dragan Klaic, back in April, AKCIJA Sarajevo – Cultural Development Agency continues with its "New Cultural Policies" programme of lectures and presentations at the Sarajevo Media Centre, with a lecture by Violeta Simjanovska, Macedonian cultural manager and director of the prominent Multimedia Performing Arts Centre from Skopje. After it submitted to the political parties in Bosnia and Herzegovina the 40,000 letters by citizens who said that they won't vote for political parties that fail to include youth oriented programmes in their platforms, and after it held series of meetings with representatives of institutions, the Youth Information Agency officially launched its "Shake Up the State" campaign, in front of the Parliament Building in Sarajevo. The campaign will last until the October 2006 parliamentary elections.

Sefik Tatlic, a free-lance journalist from Sarajevo, compiled a list of search engines for free content on the web. Tatlic intended this list for all journalists (but also all interested persons) who need video or audio footage for their programmes, and texts and information for the print media journalists, who wish the avoid the necessary fuss with security publication or use rights and paying royalties to the authors, directing them at material protected under some CC license.

On Friday, May 12, a meeting was held between the local youth group and the representatives of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Zenica-Doboj Canton (ZDK). The meeting was held under the "Computerization of Secondary Schools in Zenica Region" project, implemented by the Foundation for Creative Development and the Youth Information Agency (OIA).

Yesterday, May 10, 2006, the Office of the Ombudsman of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina released the Annual Report on its activities and human rights situation in FBiH in 2005. The Ombudspersons identify the legislative branch as the greatest obstacle to the full implementation of human rights, which produces, through its inaction or adoption of discriminatory and, often, inapplicable laws, mass human rights violations.

The Regional Conscientious Objection Network «Objection for Peace» is a coalition of organizations that work on promotion of the right to conscientious objection in the region of Southeast Europe. It was established in February 2003, with the aim to achieve greater protection for the right to conscientious objection and its correct implementation in legislation and practice, in accordance with the valid legislation on regional level, through joint action.

Bosnia and Herzegovina was notorious, during the last decade, as a country in which the most ruthless copyrights violations took place. You could see, for example, the latest Holiwood production on local television stations even before they were available at American cinemas. According to the information presented by DANI magazine (December 10, 1999), only 10 percent of the total sale of recorded music was legal, while the remaining sales were made on the black market.

The VIVISECTfest Human Rights Festival will start tomorrow (May 4) in Sarajevo. This year's Sarajevo edition of the Festival is a continuation of the cycle of travelling festivals held in 2005 in Indjija, Belgrade, Kikinda, Tuzla, Sombor, Berlin, Backa Palanka, Novi Becer and Novi Pazar, in cooperation with local partner organizations. The Festival closes on May 7, 2006.
