Iraq remains the top country of origin of asylum applicants (13,200 claims) in industrialised countries for the fourth consecutive year, according to the UN refugee agency. Afghans (12,000) and Somalis (11,000) are the next largest groups as security conditions continue to deteriorate in large parts of their home countries.

An ngo that is part of the UK-based team coordinating election observers for the much-delayed presidential elections in the internationally unrecognised Republic of Somaliland has expressed "profound disappointment and concern" at the indefinite postponement of the poll.

The situation of Somali refugees in overcrowded refugee camps in Kenya "is simply scandalous", warns an international medical charity, whose representative in Nairobi says: "These refugees have risked everything to escape the fighting in Somalia. Now some are telling us they would rather take their chances in Mogadishu than die slowly here."
