The recent death of John Garang is a shocking setback to Sudan's peace process, but not a fatal one. The Bush administration deserves much of the credit for the peace deal signed in January, and if it keeps its nerve, can help preserve the peace with Garangs successor, says Alex De Waal.

The North-South peace deal in Sudan may face its toughest test yet after John Garang, who led rebel forces' decades-long struggle for autonomy and was sworn-in as the country's vice-president just weeks ago, died in a helicopter crash Sunday.

The death of Sudanese vice-president John Garang in a helicopter crash threatens to destabilise the fragile peace deal between the government and Southern rebels.
more...A side-effect of the peace deal was to take pressure off the government to end what has been called the first genocide of the 21st century, in Darfur, and last week the author of a new book on Darfur said the conflict there had actually been triggered by the North-South peace negotiations.
