01.08.2005 The death of Sudanese vice-president John Garang in a helicopter crash threatens to destabilise the fragile peace deal between the government and Southern rebels.
A side-effect of the peace deal was to take pressure off the government to end what has been called ‘the first genocide of the 21st century’, in Darfur, and last week the author of a new book on Darfur said the conflict there had actually been triggered by the North-South peace negotiations.
