Kurum Steel Mills still havent installed the required dust arresting filters, in spite of the fact that two deadlines (June 30 and August 14, 2005) have expired. The 3.5 million Euros investment has been postponed for the second half of September, at the earliest.

The overall political situation in Albania after the Elections of July 3, 2005, as well as the series of meetings with the leaders of the two major political parties, have forced Alfred Moisiu, the President of Albania, to demand last week from the State Elections Commission to release the final results and more details and information on the Election.

The World Bank announced that it will allocate 3 million USD in the reparation of irrigation system, drainage channels and rivers in the District of Elbasan, Albania. The current situation is a real concern, having in mind that the lack of proper care in the past have seriously depleted the overall safety and security of the system.

After Struga, Ulcinj and Saranda, the 5th International Book Fair will visit Vlora. 5,000 books will be exhibited on the boulevard, near the Petro Marko theater. In this 5th edition, the Fair aims to attract not only the citizens of Vlora, but also the tourists staying in the area.

Like elsewhere in the world, the number of people infected HIV/AIDS is on the rise in Albania. Over the past several years, the number of women with HIV/AIDS is slightly larger with women that with men, report the International Organization for Migrations and the Institute of Public Health, the implementers of the Inclusion of Albanian artists and sportsmen in campaign against HIV/AIDS project.

In a session closed to the media, held last week, the Government of Albanian decided to increase the entry quotas for Albanian Universities by approximately 25 percent. Also, the Government decided to increase the amounts of tuition fees for students of public universities.

After a number of warnings, the Durres District Office cancelled the contract to supply the citizens of this coastal city with potable water with the German company Berlin Wasser. The decision to annul the contract is a result of the irresponsible and indifferent attitude of the officials of the German company.

Last week, August 3, the Tirana Municipality adopted a decision to introduce fines and penalties for citizens that dont follow the official schedule for waste collection as installed by the Municipal Council.

One of the absolute resources of tourist ecosystem in Velipoja beach is Vilunis lagoon, which, according to the numerous information boards on the road to the lagoon, is a protected area. The lagoon is a home to a variety of fish, endemic plants, extraordinary birds starting from the nightingale up to the woodpecker and other birds, which are rare in our country.

Turkish concern Kurum, which operates the Elbasan Still Mills under a lease, has started the works on the installation of a new environmental protection system. The system should decrease the amount of pollutants released in the air in the area of Elbasan. The total operation is expected to be completed by August 14.
