On 26th April 1986, an explosion occurred in one of the reactors of the nuclear power station in Chernobyl in Ukraine. Over the next ten days more than a thousand people fought to put out the resulting fire, as a radioactive cloud spread across much of northern Europe. Nearly twenty years later, scientists have different opinions about the broader effects on health, the environment, and the social and economic impacts in those countries most affected by the disaster.
