School students would be sent on "school safaris" to local environmental hot-spots if advocacy groups Demos and Green Alliance had their way. In a new report, the two non-profits argue that children in urban areas need more access to green spaces if they are not to lose touch with the natural environment.

A People and Planet student group in Bristol has persuaded their catering firm to provide Fairtrade products. Students at Cotham High School have successfully negotiated with their catering facility - which is managed by the food services giant Sodexho - to provide Fairtrade chocolate bars in the canteen and Fairtrade tea and coffee in the common room. Low-income neighbourhoods suffer from a lack of clean air and open spaces, and are disproportionately close to industrial sites, while children living in deprived areas are five times more likely than other children to be killed by a car, according to a new report from the Institute for Public Policy Research. The think-tank is calling on the government to do more to tackle environmental problems that blight the lives of Britain's poorest communities.

The Commission for Racial Equality says targets should be set for football clubs to increase the number of ethnic minority staff or face legal action. It says too many clubs are merely paying lip service to cracking down on racism in the sport, with the majority not even adopting equal opportunities policies.
