The Sudanese refugees remaining in detention in Cairo will not be deported, an Egyptian official has said. They were detained shortly before the New Year after police violently evicted them from the protest camp they had erected in a Cairo neighborhood to support their demands for resettlement to a third country.

International agency Oxfam has said that rich countries must change their attitude to world trade negotiations and show leadership to deliver reforms that lift people out of poverty. It wants the EU and US to stop making excuses for not reforming agricultural trade rules and to end their unreasonable demands for developing countries to open industry and services markets.

The U.S. has the perfect opportunity to stop the genocide in Darfur when it takes over the presidency of the U.N Security Council this February. A massive call-in campaign will target the U.S. mission to the U.N. Wednesday and a rally for Darfur will take place at the White House Thursday.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu has accused the UK of "meanness of spirit" in a letter to Gordon Brown asking him to return £1.7bn that the UK will receive from Nigeria as its share of a deal by rich countries to write off much of Nigeria's debts.

The groundwork has been laid to bring Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe to The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity, but complacency and corruption may leave millions waiting for justice. Mr. Kan-Dapaah Minister of Communications of Ghana announced that Ghana's telecommunication sector has witnessed a dramatic improvement in telecommunications infrastructure in the year 2005 in response to the innovative policies and growing confidence in the management of the sector. Ghana's tele-density now stands at fifteen per cent.

Campaigners say the UK Treasury will pocket a £1.7 billion windfall almost twice the entire aid budget for Africa from a deal to cancel part of Nigeria's debt and accuse the government of effectively raiding the aid budget to help balance the UK's finances.

As the first leg of this year's World Social Forum drew to a close in West Africa Monday, participants noted the decidedly "Afrocentric" focus of the event. Despite minor administrative glitches, participants discussed issues ranging from women's rights to the conflict in the Sudan, and shuttled between more than 800 events and activities.
