'Million Voices for Darfur' postcard campaign in the US, organised by the Save Darfur coalition, culminates in a Washington rally on 30 April
29.04.2006 Unless rebel attacks against UN and other relief operations in part of Sudan's Darfur region stop immediately, the world body will suspend all assistance to 450,000 vulnerable people in the area, a top UN official said.
The statement came on top of an already volatile mix of developments, with the World Food Programme slashing relief supplies to displaced people because it has run out of money, reports of a rise in government attacks and a warning that the deadline for a peace deal is unlikely to be met.

28.04.2006 Mary Kayitesi Blewitt lost almost her entire family in the Rwandan genocide and subsequently set up a fund for the 365,000 survivors who continue against the odds, haunted by memories and under threat from perpetrators now released from prison. To accompany the production of The Overwhelming at the National Theatre in London, on 27 June she will discuss the work of the charity and the continuing effect of the atrocities.

27.04.2006 Ivory Coast has become the sixth African country to announce the outbreak of the dreaded bird flu. Viral strains taken from infected backyard chickens in the capital Abidjan have tested positive H5N1 avian influenza. Ivory Coast joins Egypt, where four people have been killed, Niger, Cameroon, Sudan and Nigeria. This comes as 19 African countries gathered in Malawi announced that the continent lacks funds, technical equipment and human resources to spot and tackle outbreaks of the disease.
