Since Sunday 19 the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) has been on general red alert with EZLN troops called into the mountains of Chiapas, and Zapatista communities advised to flee by their Juntas de Buen Gobierno (Governing Councils), amid fears that war in Chiapas is likely to resume. The Zapatista "Caracoles" or "centers of zapatista autonomy" have also been closed [Pics of the Caracoles La Garrucha and Morelia]

"Honoring diversity is honoring life. Montevideo for the respect of all genders, sexual identities and orientations," reads a triangular granite monument in the heart of Uruguay's capital city. The monument, which acknowledges the right of sexual diversity, is the first of its kind in Latin America.

In the past five years, Latin America and the Caribbean have continued to advance in the fight against hunger, to improve gender equity in education and access to drinking water, and to reduce infant mortality, but the region continues to lag behind in meeting some of the Millennium goals, such as halving extreme poverty, making primary education universal, and turning around the decline in the environment.

De acordo com a pesquisa, o índice de matérias pautadas por questões que podem provocar reflexão (Índice de Relevância Social - IRS) superou o número das consideradas não-relevantes para a formação cidadã dos adolescentes. Essa tendência vem se consolidando a cada ano. Em 2001 o IRS era de apenas 45,97%. Já em 2002 subiu para 53,85%. Nos dois anos seguintes evoluiu para 54,84% e 57,54%, respectivamente.

Mexico's Zapatista rebel group is ready to take "a new step in the struggle" and consult with members on the future of its 11-year fight for Indian rights, leader Subcomandante Marcos said on Tuesday.

The reason for this general Red Alert is that the Clandestine Revolutionary Indigenous Committee - General Command of the EZLN has called to consulta their insurgent troops, all their comandantes and comandantas, regional and local responsables and their support bases.
