Intel, Fannie Mae, and Cisco Systems top the U.S. government's list of Fortune 500 companies that have the best commuting benefits for their employees. The list, issued for the first time by the Environmental Protection Agency, ranks those companies that have subsidized transit or vanpool passes, telework programs, bike lockers and showers, and other outstanding commuter benefits.

Grameen Foundation USA has merged with Digital Partners, a US-based non-profit organisation, to strengthen the use of ICTs in reducing poverty. The project is expected to expand Grameen Foundation’s Village Computing Project that seeks to connect India’s rural poor through internet kiosks.

The union representing tens of thousands of striking public sector workers is heckling proposals to hike salaries for federal judges and MPs. The Judicial Compensation and Benefits Commission is recommending a 10 per cent boost this year. Meanwhile, striking PSAC workers are being pressed to accept raises less than a quarter as generous.

Speaking at a recent press briefing in Kabul, the head of the U.S forces in Afghanistan said remnant of Taliban and Al-Qaeda allies are active in the some southern provinces of Afghanistan and the rugged mountain area that borders Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal regions. He said the two organizations are not participating in the coming elections and have a shared objective of disrupting it.

Lummi Tribal members from Washington state presented two totem poles in honor of the 182 victims who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks at the Pentagon. Presented at a ceremony on September 19, the Pentagon poles are the third set carved as a tribute to 9/11 victims, the tribe had previously presented totem poles to New York city and to Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The Ontario government has chased out an Ohio-based diagnostic health clinic that was planning to offer fee-based services from mobile vans. Life Line Screening's services are already available for free under Canadian medicare. "These companies prey on fear," said Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman. "They create business by generating a sense of need around services."

Controversy rages in the labour movement as Canadian Labour Congress president Ken Georgetti tries to explain media reports that he now supports free trade. Georgetti insists CLC policy is to continue to oppose NAFTA and other similar trade deals. But a CLC position paper on the subject says free trade is not the "economic disaster" once predicted.

California is taking the lead again on cutting greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks. The state's Air Resources Board has approved new rules to reduce emissions by up to 25 per cent by 2015. Anticipating that move last week, the Sierra Club urged Canada to follow suit, and to stop wasting time brokering a "voluntary" agreement with industry.
