Depois de reforçar o embargo à Cuba, os Estados Unidos criaram esta semana uma "coordenadoria para a transição cubana", com o objetivo, segundo o governo norte-americano, de "acelerar o fim da tirania cubana". A iniciativa foi duramente criticada pelo governo de Cuba, que a classificou como uma pequena mostra das agressões do governo dos Estados Unidos contra a ilha.

Kyoto holdouts Australia and the U.S. are expected to announce a plan to address climate change on Thursday, but campaigners and politicians around the world are wary that the deal is an attempt to undermine the otherwise widely accepted Kyoto protocol and promote U.S. technologies. The pact is not thought to include any targets or timetables for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

International agency Oxfam called on US Members of Congress today to reject the Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Central American countries and the Dominican Republic (DR-CAFTA.) Oxfam believes that the agreement, in its current form, will do more harm than good and will endanger the livelihood of many thousands of small farmers who already live in poverty.

Could Telesur be Latin America's al-Jazeera? The continent-wide TV station launched Sunday, offering viewers a different perspective from the U.S.- and Europe-based corporate stations that currently dominate the airwaves. But, apparently afraid to lose the hearts and minds of another region, U.S. lawmakers have already reacted, authorizing $9 million for Washington to create its own competing station.
