Attempting to crush a rebel movement, the Central African Republic's army has been burning civilian houses in violation of humanitarian law, charges a refugee support group. Approximately 250,000 Central Africans have been displaced in successive waves of violence since 2003.

Building on a period of relative stability and the country's first democratic elections in 40 years, the Democratic Republic of Congo's government has moved to reintegrate former soldiers into private life and protect indigenous groups and the vast forest resources they depend on.

A high-level UN human rights team today accused the Sudanese government of orchestrating and participating in "large-scale international crimes" in Darfur. But the conflict is also affecting Chad and the Central African Republic. Gérard Prunier says that although all three countries have agreed to respect each others territorial integrity, the diplomatic activity conceals an international political deadlock over potential oil wealth.
