After several southern African countries rejected food aid with genetically modified grain in 2002-2003, a heated debate was launched over biotechnology--with the public left uncertain about the truth. South Africa is taking a tough stance on Zimbabwe, announcing on Tuesday that it will impose stringent political and economic conditions on a loan request from its cash-strapped neighbor. Zimbabwe is facing expulsion from the IMF for failing to make debt payments, and strong condemnation from the U.N. for its notorious urban clean-up campaign, Operation Restore Order.

G8 and African leaders meeting today to discuss ways of fighting poverty in Africa should urge Zimbabwes government to end its campaign of forced evictions, which has destroyed the homes and livelihoods of thousands of Zimbabweans, Human Rights Watch said today.
