The international diamond certification scheme known as the Kimberley Process is due for review next year. Campaigners say that participating countries are not fulfilling their reporting obligations and that diamonds continue to fund conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Cote D'Ivoire.

Speaking recently as Chair of the African Union, President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria had plenty of advice for G8 leaders on aid, debt and trade issues. And he made a plea that the right to "decent work" should be included in the Millennium Development Goals.

Low rainfall and last year's desert locust plague have Mali facing the worst drought in recent years, reports Action Against Hunger (AAH). One out of three children under five is now suffering from malnutrition and AAH is calling on the international community to respond as soon as possible to prevent the crisis from getting worse.

West African neighbors Benin and Nigeria agreed last week to unite efforts to prevent and suppress human trafficking, particularly of women and children. With cross-border trafficking into Nigeria rising, the countries further pledged to protect, rehabilitate, and return trafficking victims to their homes.

In Niger, the next harvest is four months away, some families are already facing serious food shortages, and at Doctors Without Borders centers, children exhibiting signs of malnutrition are showing up in ever-increasing numbers.
