In 1982, 444 indigenous men, women, and children were killed as they protested their forced relocation to make way for a World Bank-financed dam in Guatemala. A prominent indigenous leader and survivor of the "Rio Negro massacres" was arrested last week on charges stemming from a recent protest against the dam, and the World Bank has been asked to step in to stop the "muzzling" of community leaders.

The New Year has arrived for human rights defenders with renewed attacks from clandestine groups and organised crime aiming to intimidate and sabotage human rights work. Attacks include death threats, attacks with firearms, false bomb alarms and "burglaries" in which mostly sensitive information was taken.

Cold-blooded killings of journalists in Mexico in 2004 transformed the barely established Center for Journalism and Public Ethics (Cepet) into an activist organization defending the very lives of its constituents. With death at the doorstep, the group sought solidarity from representatives of the U.S. media in a border conference to fortify the free press. But only a week later another Mexican journalist was gunned down.

El gobernador Fidel Herrera calculó que al menos 60 mil personas, entre ellas familias de pescadores, sufrirán las secuelas del desastre ecológico en el sur del estado por el derrame de miles de barriles de crudo al río Coatzacoalcos, al fracturarse un ducto propiedad de Pemex.
