The Bush administration is making a final push for Congressional passage of a free trade agreement with five Central American countries and the Dominican Republic, but claims that it will improve economies and strengthen freedom and democracy in Central America are not even supported by a majority in the Republican-led U.S. Congress, says In These Times senior editor David Moberg.

Nicaraguan fruit plantation workers, exposed to the pesticide Nemagon used by Dole, Chiquita, and Del Monte in the 1970s, are today suffering from incurable illness and many of their children were born with horrific deformities. Though the chemical was known to be toxic to humans and banned in the United States, the companies continued to use it in other countries without disclosing the health risks. The workers have never been compensated.

At the age of 26, Erika McCloud is providing computer training to all the students in her local high school and elementary school. At first, she seems like an unlikely candidate for teacher, having left high school many years ago to take on temporary jobs as kitchen helper and housekeeper before earning her diploma. More.

OAKLAND, USA, May 4 (IPS) - An armed private group that patrolled the U.S.-Mexican border last month has gone home with an unequivocal endorsement from California Governor Arnold Shwarzenegger and benign media coverage. Come October, they say, they will return to the border in the tens of thousands.
