In a preliminary ruling Monday, Mexico's electoral court rejected Andrés López Obrador's claims that presidential elections were marred by widespread fraud. The ruling left little doubt that Felipe Calderón would be confirmed as the winner on the court's September 6th deadline.

Paramilitaries and police in Oaxaca have begun a violent campaign to shut down all media operations that are in opposition to governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz. The closures are a move to silence the people's movement that has taken over the state, observers say.

SAN JOSE, Aug 28 (IPS) - Weary of the snail's pace ratification process of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), which continues to dominate Costa Rica's political and social agenda, some companies are weighing the idea of moving to other Central American countries should Congress reject the treaty.

More than 8,000 Mexicans have organized sit-ins for the 17th straight day in the nation's capital, vowing to stay until left-wing candidate Andrés Lopez Obrador is declared president. While a partial recount has narrowed his lead, Felipe Calderon still holds a razor slim edge in the current tally.
