Could Telesur be Latin America's al-Jazeera? The continent-wide TV station launched Sunday, offering viewers a different perspective from the U.S.- and Europe-based corporate stations that currently dominate the airwaves. But, apparently afraid to lose the hearts and minds of another region, U.S. lawmakers have already reacted, authorizing $9 million for Washington to create its own competing station.

Despite nearly 10,000 slave laborers released in recent years, thousands in Brazil remain in forced labor, and within the last year anti-slavery efforts have weakened, with fewer inspections and fewer people released. Anti-Slavery International reports how Brazil can prioritize anti-slavery action and meet its goal to eliminate slave labor in the country by 2006.

In a meeting with Colombian president Alvaro Uribe today, Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Khan said that ending impunity is the key for the protection of human rights in the country and urged the President not to ratify the Justice and Peace Law.

A imprensa latino-americana alerta que, neste ano, o número de brasileiros capturados por tentar entrar nos Estados Unidos pela fronteira com o México aumentou. Há informações de que mais de 12 mil brasileiros fracassaram em sua tentativa apenas em 2005. O aumento da quantidade de brasileiros que tentam entrar ilegalmente nos Estados Unidos pela fronteira com o México pode ser explicado pela ação de quadrilhas de contrabandistas, que oferecem pacotes baratos. Somente em dois dias do mês de maio, 200 brasileiros foram detidos.

Following this year's WTO decision that the U.S. cotton subsidy program violated international trade rules, the Bush administration has announced a proposal to eliminate all cotton export subsidies. Congress still must approve the proposal, but Oxfam hailed the move as a signal of the U.S.'s willingness to make trade fairer for poor countries.

Recruited by the Colombian government to teach the ABCs of business to former paramilitary group members, ACCION International's staff had apprehensions about working closely with such an unpredictable group. As it turns out, the students had fears of their own--which, as the classes continued, grew into self-confidence and an awareness of their abilities.
