SAN FRANCISCO, May 30 (OneWorld) - American private aid agencies are responding to the massive earthquake that hit Indonesia over the weekend. The magnitude 6.3 quake that struck southern Java in the early morning Saturday left over 5,000 dead, 20,000 injured, and 130,000 homeless.

Burmas democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was arrested in May 2003 after the regimes militia attacked her convoy and killed up to 100 of her supporters. She is still in detention. Burmas military dictatorship extended Aung San Suu Kyis detention at the weekend, despite calls for her release from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. The move was also an embarrassment for UN Under-Secretary Ibrahim Gambari, who campaigners said was "duped by the regimes lies and propaganda" during his visit to the country last week.
