The Human Rights Watch has called for a ban on the import of Burmas precious stones, saying the trade helps finance its military rulers to stay in power. The country is in deep political turmoil following the military junta crackdown against Buddhist monks and other civil protesters, who are being subject to severe human rights abuses.

State-run Burmese gemstone companies took in nearly $300 million profit last year, which helped fund the military regime and its human rights violations, said a human rights watchdog, urging wider sanctions than those already imposed by Europe and the United States.

Former Khmer Rouge leaders Ieng Sary and his wife Khieu Thirith have been formally charged with high crimes by the genocide tribunal and remanded in custody in Cambodia, a court spokesman said on Monday.
