Journalists and editors from several Pristina and Belgrade media gathered yesterday at the Belgrade-Pristina Media Dialogue meeting, organized in Belgrade under the auspices of the Civil Dialogue. The participants in the event estimated that the media from Kosovo and Serbia should cooperate and exchange information.

On Tuesday, June 27, the US Congress House of Representatives has adopted a resolution demanding that those responsible for the Srebrenica massacre be brought to justice. The US Senate watered down the text of the Resolution the next day.

The LULUDI Roma Association of Women and Youth, in cooperation with the For a Happy Childhood NGO, implemented a national survey on the use of health insurance and healthcare among the Roma in Macedonia. The survey, conducted on a sample of 1,000 Roma families, provides a general picture of the characteristics, needs and priorities of the Roma population in terms of healthcare.

Representatives of the Familija Ngo from Prijedor presented the Association of Roma of Prijedor Area with technical and office equipment. The donation, worth 12,000 KM (approximately 6,000 EUR), includes a TV set, VCR machine, CD-radio player/recorder, fax machine and one computer the software and hardware package.

The civil sector did much more on the establishment of new relations in the region, and their normalization, than the states of the Dayton Triangle themselves. It made an important step forward towards understanding, renewed trust, and opened the doors to the future for the region. These points were reinforced by the 10th Session of the Igman Initiative held in Belgrade last several days.

The situation for displaced Roma (RAE --- Roma, Ashkali, and Egyptian) populations in Kosovo is precarious as they remain in unsuitable living conditions in camps throughout Kosovo and in the Former Yugoslavia Republic of Macedonia six years after their original displacement. While the overall situation in Kosovo is not conducive to mass return due to the continued uncertain security situation, opportunities do exist for voluntary RAE return, says the analysis by Refugees International.

Six years after their original displacement, Kosovo's Roma people continue to live in camps. Discrimination and conflicts between the region's ethnic populations continue to stall the return process. Refugees International has four recommendations to end the discrimination and poor living conditions of the Roma.

Macedonia has taken another step along the road to Euro-Atlantic integration by attempting to reform its notoriously inefficient and corrupt judiciary. However, analysts fear that, in its attempt to impress Brussels, Skopje is rushing into the process without any real clear idea of how to proceed with the reforms.

The Danube Day, July 29, is international manifestation with many different events are organized in all 13 countries along the Danube River, designed to attract the attention to the need for protection of the Danube and its waters. Events will be organized under the Danube Day observance, with the aim to encourage the states, communities and organizations to cooperate in taking action to protect the rivers in the area.

The Osijek-based Coalition for Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (LSC) currently implements three programmes: a campaign for definition of the status of NGOs that provide free legal assistance; promotion of minority rights; and promotion of European anti-racism and anti-xenophobia values. These are long-term programmes and campaigns that proceed over several years and involve organizations from all over Croatia.
