Mobile for Good is at the forefront of utilising mobile technologies in development. The project, initially implemented in Kenya in 2003, aims to offer essential, life-changing information to disadvantaged and often marginalised communities in developing countries.

Set up by OneWorld UK, and benefiting from crucial alliances with key partner organisations, M4G aims to help alleviate poverty and improve livelihoods worldwide.

The conception of Mobile for Good Kenya, the first franchisee of M4G, has already indirectly affected more than 150,000 individuals in a positive way by disseminating job or health information through the SMS component on mobile phones.

The job brokering service, Kazi560, has been particularly successful, with figures showing that over 60,000 jobs in Kenya were filled by people who received the job information through the service to date. M4G also offers a health information service (covering topics such as breast cancer and HIV/AIDS) and a community news service.

M4G is now a social franchise, and are looking to expand into further countries in 2006 and beyond. Mobile for Good Kenya is an independent Kenyan company and is now financially self-sustaining. The franchises will be run as social ventures.
