Bali: 'Help is on the way'
|
It's Day One of the UN climate change conference in Bali and alread there's good news: "My message is," said Alden Meyer of the Union of Concerned Scientists, "help is on the way."
He gave a positive review of developments in the US, pointing out that Bills in the Senate and House of Representatives indicated that climate change was being taken seriously - a point reinforced by US surveys showed a strong majority in favour of reducing global emissions. In addition, a growing number of states had taken actions to curb emissions. "There has been a real shift in US political aspirations", he said, and commented: "George Bush represents the past, not the future, in terms of global policy on emissions." The Bush Administration's approach to climate change was not good, he told a press conference given by the Climate Action Network, a network of 430 NGOs - "but the Administration won't be around when the next agreement is signed". * Bali conference 'not discussing whether climate change is happening' |
