Saudi Arabia tops the roll of dishonour
|
Saudi Arabia was given the Fossil of the Day Award by NGOs at the climate change conference in Bali, Indonesia, on Wednesday.
The unprize was awarded for "a long and rambling intervention" in the conference and for referring to the "noble cause of fighting climate change" when, the NGOs said, "Saudi Arabia has been trying to undermine the fight against climate change specifically by campaigning against adverse economic effects". Secnd prize went to the previous day's winners, Japan, for complaining that the "key technologies" of carbon capture and nuclear energy had been left out of an important document " - although "carbon capture is an unproven technology that entails many risks and nuclear energy has amply proven itself to be one of the most dangerous technologies technoogies ever." Th European Union picked up third prize for backing the Global Environment Facility to run the Adaptation Fund that will help developing countries convert to more efficient use of energy, even though developing countries considered that the governance of the Facility reinforced global inequality. |
