Science Museum looks to Copenhagen conference with new exhibition

Today (22 October 2009) the Science Museum launched “Prove It! All the evidence you need to believe in climate change”. Alongside this bold and stylish new exhibit, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Foreign Secretary David Miliband launched a new map showing the impacts of a global temperature rise of 4ºC, produced by the Met Office Hadley Centre.

Prove It!, and an accompanying website (www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/proveit), allows visitors to explore the evidence for climate change and the key issues at the UN Copenhagen Conference. This is presented through the perspectives of six characters, each representing a different person likely to be at the Copenhagen conference in December. Characters include a climate change modeller, a human rights expert and an economist. Prove It! is a multimedia exhibit composed of digital and video displays in an environment designed by Ab Rogers Design and venturethree.

Professor Chris Rapley CBE, Director of the Science Museum said:

“The Copenhagen conference is a crucial opportunity to find an international solution to the threat of climate change and to transform the way we generate and consume energy.”

Visitors are encouraged to be a part of Prove It! ahead of the Copenhagen conference and make their voice heard by taking part in a poll to find out whether they agree with the statement “I want the government to prove they’re serious about climate change by negotiating a strong, effective, fair deal at Copenhagen”. The results of the poll will be published in early December.

Dr Vicky Carroll, Prove It! Project Leader and Curator of Science at the Science Museum said:

“Scientific evidence shows that climate change is happening. We need to tackle it urgently. Prove it! allows visitors to explore the evidence for climate change in the Science Museum and online, get to grips with the Copenhagen conference, and make their view count.”

In June 2010 the Science Museum will launch a three-year climate change programme including a major new gallery and a series of events. Further details will be announced in 2010.

Prove It! will be accompanied by a series of events in the Antenna science news gallery and at the Science Museum’s Dana Centre.
