Engineers Without Borders UK (EWB-UK) is an international development organisation that facilitates human development through engineering. The organisation provides opportunities for young engineers in the UK to learn about technology’s role in development. Through a network of university societies at over thirty universities across the UK, students are given the chance to attend talks from development professionals, attend training courses to understand how technology can be used in development, and run outreach projects in schools, to teach the younger generation about engineering in development. Support is also provided for students to undertake research projects as part of their degree course on the theme of development, and we are working to expand the coverage of global issues in university curricular by working with students, professionals and academics.
The organisation also has a community of professionals who interact with and support the university students, and help to build links with NGOs. Through these Professional Networks in cities across the UK, professionals are able to find out more about development, and offer their assistance and expertise to those who are entering the profession.
EWB-UK’s biggest contribution to development is the overseas placements. Through sending students and young professionals to volunteer with partner organisations overseas – funded or partly supported through the bursary scheme, EWB-UK is able to support and strengthen the capacity of these organisations. This ensures that we are working towards our vision of a world where access to technology or infrastructure is not a barrier to poverty alleviation.
