UNICEF and International Service are to begin a new child protection project in north and north-east Brazil. This is an area of extreme poverty - the only part of Brazil where poverty rose during the 1990s. The project will involve consultations with children and will develop proposals for better health care and other improvements in the protection of children's rights.

Four UN human rights experts have begun an emergency 10-day mission in Sudan to investigate claims by a senior UN official of "ethnic cleansing" in the western Darfur region. According to relief agencies, tens of thousands of refugees have fled to escape attacks from militias and government troops.

The failure to achieve safe water and sanitation is the biggest mistake of national and international development efforts over the last 50 years, according to a new publication by the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council called Listening. Attend the publication launch at the World Water Day conference, 22 March, in London.

study tours take place each year, visiting UN programmes in different countries. UNA-UK's study tour to Brazil, 6-22 September 2004, will include visits to some of the UN agencies in the country and project visits. Closing date for applications:19 March.
