Almost half the women of Latin American older than 15 years have no income of their own, while just one of every five men is in this situation. Moreover, women heads of households have less monetary income than men, in both impoverished and higher income households.

The Fourth Caribbean Ministerial Conference on Women will convene in St. Vincent and the Grenadines from 12 to 13 February 2004 to review the objectives of the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action and assess their implementation. It will be preceded by a technical meeting on 11 February 2004 attended by the heads of national machineries for women in the subregion.

Caribbean countries meet this week to assess their performance in implementing the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS POA). Representatives of Caribbean SIDS; regional, regionally based and international agencies; as well as the private and civil society sectors will review the implementation experience and identify strategies for strengthening the sustainable development process.
