Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) has awarded this year’s international press freedom award to Hayatullah Khan of Pakistan along with other journalists. An exception was made to honour Khan who had been abducted in December 2005 and whose body was found in June 2006.

KARACHI, August 10 2006: A press release by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and the All Pakistan Newspapers Employees Confederation (Apnec) has blamed intelligence agencies for the rising incidents of violence against journalists.

The Pakistan Press Foundation reports that the government has once again banned Blogspot in the country. The Pakistani government banned the site after receiving an order from the Supreme Court because of the controversy related to the prophet.

Police have shut down 87 FM radio stations which were operating illegally from religious seminaries and mosques in various districts of the NWFP, officials said on May 22. Law-enforcement officials said they had shut down the radio stations after conducting joint raids with representatives of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on seminaries and mosques.
