After ten years supporting independent media in the country, and ten minutes of deliberation by Tashkent's city court, Internews has been forced to close up shop. Following a maelstrom of popular uprisings in the region, Uzbek authorities have cracked-down on non-governmental organizations over the past 18 months.

The inaugural Global Forum for Media Development addressed the issues facing media professionals and highlighted the role independent media plays in political and economic development. This year's event, in Amman, Jordan, drew over six hundred journalists and media experts from nearly 100 countries.

Accurate information about family planning and reproductive health issues is difficult to come by in Afghanistan--for journalists as well as the general public. A 5-day workshop for radio, TV, and print journalists in Kabul earlier this month aimed to begin to change that.

Internews, a U.S.-based media training NGO, has been ordered to close its office in Uzbekistan following months of harrassment by the Uzbek government, which has been cracking down on foreign non-governmental organizations.

In India, 45% of all new HIV infections are among youth aged 15 to 25, yet still few young people see themselves as vulnerable to the virus. Radio and television hosts savvy with the young, are using their shows as a platform to clarify the myths and misperceptions about HIV/AIDS.
