HDRA – recently renamed Garden Organic, carries out scientific research, advises on and promotes organic food, farming and gardening. It is one of the UK’s oldest environmental charities, with more than 30,000 members. HDRA’s division of research and development seeks to develop and improve the techniques used in organic agriculture and to advance the knowledge of organic production systems and their socio-economic implications. Within this, HDRA’s International Programme has, since 1996, worked to promote and facilitate sustainable, organic agriculture appropriate to lower-income regions of mainly the tropics and subtropics. The goal of the Programme is to contribute to a wider understanding and practice of organic agriculture as a means to both improve food security and build environmental resilience.
