Scrub and glacial lakes

Near Thanza in Gasa. Below the barren zone one encounters alpine pastures and scrub in a landscape often dotted with glacial lakes. Some 24 of these lakes are in danger of bursting through the moraine walls that hold their water. In 1994, such a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) of a lake near Thanza caused extensive damage all the way down to Punakha.
