WASH Adviser - Regional Public Health Promoter (Oxfam GB) Fixed - Term contract

Oxfam Great Britain

WASH Adviser - Regional Public Health Promoter (Oxfam GB) Fixed - Term contract
Home based in a South Asian country with extensive travel within the region.

South Asia is extremely vulnerable to natural disasters. Between 1990 and 2008, over 750 million people across the region – 50% of the population – were affected by natural disasters, with almost 230,000 losing their lives. Today, some 600 million people live on less than US$1.25 a day, so even small scale disasters can tip many into destitution. In this role, you’ll help to ensure that this region has the right public health facilities in place to build for the future and recover quickly if disaster strikes.

The role
This role could see you deployed to a number of different countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and possibly India, and for differing amounts of time. Wherever you’re working, you’ll lead our public health strategies and programmes but the exact nature of your role will vary depending on the staffing, competency levels and emergency context of each location. You’re likely to provide coaching and mentoring to our staff and partners, recruit new team members, and plan and implement informal and formal training sessions. Your focus could be on carrying out assessments of public health risks and making recommendations for strategic responses, or you might need to lead by example, playing a hands-on role in the implementation of public health initiatives. We’ll expect you to involve local communities in the assessment, planning and implementation of public health activities, and to prepare regular reports.

What we’re looking for
You should be educated to degree level in public health or a related discipline with community-based experience in a relevant area such as development, water supply, adult education or HIV/AIDS, and you’ll certainly have worked on public health emergencies recently. You should have an inclusive management style, excellent assessment, analytical and planning skills, and experience of training and capacity building. Good spoken English is essential.
