Dr Andrew Githeko, Kenya Medical Research Institute explains that mosquito populations have increased in the East African highlands. In 1998 severe malaria epidemics struck these communities who had never been exposed to the disease before and had no immunity. In one highland village of 2000 people, 900 became sick.
