Every Alaskan citizen receives a yearly dividend from the oil profits. Last year it was almost $2000. The oil industry brings prosperity to the region in terms of jobs and trade, so most are in favour of drilling in the refuge. Sixty-seven percent of all oil consumed in the US goes into car gas tanks and the average American causes the emission of twice as much carbon dioxide as the average European. In reality, every barrel of oil sent south and burned comes back to Alaska as damage to the delicate balance of Arctic life.
