"Anna Politkovskaya"

Comment: Hello,
While in some ways it's difficult to justify giving the award to someone who isn't still alive, when there are so many worthy nominees who may be able to use the recognition for their ongoing work, on the other hand Politkovskaya's voice was a vital voice of conscience attempting to restrain creeping authoritarianism in a major nuclear armed state. I think it's important to give the award to her to send a message that they can kill the messenger, but not the message of compassion, empathy, and hope for a democratic, peaceful future. (See a message from her at http://www.peaceworkmagazine.org/node/352).
In Peace,

P.S. one other group I wish had been nominated, as it is one of the great under-reported stories of the year: the people of Nepal, who nonviolently overthrew the King despite murderous attacks by the state. Even as at least 17 demonstrators were killed, and thousands injured, by "security" forces, more people kept coming into the streets, uncowed, to protest. See the article "Nonviolent Uprising in Nepal Restores Democracy" at http://www.peaceworkmagazine.org/node/94

"The Person of the Year - Al Gore"

Time: 24.01.2007 17:36

Comment: The Person of the Year! What a word and what a difficult choice to make, especially when there are many other people in the world - most of them working behind the scenes - who give their time, their heart, their soul and sometimes even their life to put humans first! What makes these One World's Finalists different? They managed to give these ‘anonymous’ people a voice by putting critical issues confronting them and us all in the spotlight! Al Santoli, Dr Rashad Zidan, Renée Saucedo, Anna Politkovskaya... All of the finalists deserve to be voted the Person of the Year. I will however give my vote to Al Gore.
The reason why I chose to vote Al Gore is because I believe global warming is the challenge of the 21st century. Indeed, if no immediate action is taken to stop global warming, millions of people - some of whom already are at the risk of dying - will die! And guess what? People living in developing countries, particularly the poorest, will be the first on the line... for a change! Prolonged droughts, catastrophic floods, rampant famine and disease which will inevitably lead to more poverty, more injustice, more inequalities, more conflicts, etc. will sabotage all the efforts being made, all the actions being taken to make a world where access to water, food, health, education, safety, and fundamental human rights are no longer the privilege of some ‘happy few’, but the right of All. Real and lasting change cannot be achieved if we do not stop global warming. And we must stop it NOW!

Comment: Al Gore and his documentary succeeded where others had failed ... to focus public attention and awareness on the fact that indeed the green house effect is real and its effects are being felt. Before making the film, Mr. Gore had a national reputation as a knowledgable and concerned citizen with an interest in the field of global warming. He was talking about it long before anyone was really ready to listen. But he kept at it anyway. It is indeed the silver lining of that very dark cloud that settled over this country ... and the world ... when he did not capture the White House in 2000.

"Dr.Rashad Zidan"

Author: S Abdullah
Time: 15.01.2007 18:03

Comment: Being a teacher in war-torn Iraq, I do appreciate the efforts exerted by Dr. Zidan. Few years ago, Iraq wiped out illliteracy as was acknowledged by the UN. Seeing a teenager stall keeper unable to fill in a receipt for me broke my heart. A student missing class for fear of being killed by indiscriminate shooting, another student detained by the MNF for no specific reasons, beaten young souls who are wishing to die before even forming dreams to fulfil in life, youths who suffered too much that they are ready to give up even before having the chance to try, and seeing a tank targeting at me and ready to shoot after going out from my class are but few nightmares we have to see everyday in Iraq. Being a freelance translator, moreover, and translating reports about the suffering of Iraqis for humanitarian agencies: the huge percentage of disabled, the high-rocketing number of orphans and widows, the uncontrolled environmental pollution, etc., have really devastated my life which used to be peaceful. Being optimistic by nature has not been enough to overcome all the miseries I see or translate. I know very well how hard it is now to step out of the doorsteps of your house in present Iraq just to help those in need. This why I nominate Dr. Rashad.

"Dr. Rashad Zidan A Guiding Star for Arab Women"

Time: 15.01.2007 05:42

Comment: I have voted Dr. Rashad Zidan because he could be a guiding star for other women in the world, particularly for the Muslim women specifically for the Arabs. It is time for the Arabs’ women and men to mobilize their communities and speak up against the armed conflict and sectarian violence. Peace in the region should be top priority of all communities. I have personally experience to mobile women for peace building. I learnt that women as human fellow, as a mother, as a sister, as a daughter, as a partner can play their pivotal role for peace building. Already, there are very success stories of women in Muslim Umaah who have played their role and established Women Aman Jirga (Peace Committee) in the Northern Pakistan to work for the most vulnerable groups during armed conflict. Well done Dr. Rashad Zidan you are setting another good example for the Arabs’ women.

"Al Santoli"

Time: 11.01.2007 02:05

Comment: I just wanted to express my experiance and opinion of Mr Santoli. Our all the years I have know of him he has served humanity. His every effort is to help, to heal and to educate others so that thay too could begin to help and heal and educate others in the ways that teach Hope. He has never in my experiance been worried about himself, he is a Hero on a Quest and I believe this Quest he will not tire of till God himself calls him home.

Needless to say I voted for him.
