About OneWorld UK

OneWorld UK is just one of the centres in a worldwide network of 13 centres - from Finland to India, Indonesia to Zambia. Each OneWorld centre has its own character and focus.

Innovation is OneWorld UK's key contribution to OWN - innovating user-generated platforms for NGO and citizen-led social change:

  • for impoverished citizens in southern continents, we have innovated media that help them reduce their own poverty and suffering. Our aim is to trigger positive spirals of social change.

  • for citizens living in the north, we have innovated media that help them learn what life is really like for people in poor communities, and share ways of living that are more empathetic and sustainable for everyone on our planet.

We also do our best to run our own organisation as a microcosm of a fair and sustainable world - to "be the change we want to see in the world", as Gandhi put it.

Here's our formal Mission Statement:

OneWorld UK leverages participatory media innovatively for a fair and sustainable world.

Our principal activities (2008) are:
  • Lifelines

Lifelines

This hugely successful free public service has already enabled tens of thousands of impoverished farmers in India to get answers to urgent questions they have about their crops or their animals. And the answers come from the very best experts in India in their field - experts whose advice would otherwise have been completely inaccessible to them as well as unaffordable. The concept is now being extended to teachers and students in India and, further afield, to support Community Practitioners in Sri Lanka. Interest in this service is growing fast in other parts of the global south too...

Another successful free public service, this project supports schoolchildren in Nigeria, promoting gender equality and relationship education. We hope that these girls and boys, who are learning to regard each other in a spirit of equal dignity, will help catalyse a culture of mutual respect between women and men as they grow up. The project uses mobile phones as well as computers - offering young people the chance to get confidential answers to the questions that are troubling them on issues like HIV/AIDS.

  • OneClimate Islands

Onclimate Island
Onclimate Island

Virtual worlds, here we come! Since September 2006, our island has hosted all kinds of Second Life [2L] climate-related events, from Live Earth Day to Susty Thursdays. But our biggest and most innovative event has been "Virtual Bali", which ran for a whole fortnight in December 2007, in parallel with the UN's Conference on Climate Change. Virtual Bali gave global citizens (from Turkmenistan to Canada) the chance to question conference participants - live - in the throes of devising and negotiating the Bali Roadmap - and to do it without the carbon or cash costs of flying to Indonesia....

Our virtual island is supported by OneClimate.net, our social networking site - a "Climate Facebook". It provides individuals and non-profits with profiles and group spaces to show-and-share what they are thinking and doing to tackle climate change. And it's a lot easier to create a space here than making a traditional website! What's different about OneClimate.net from most other climate change sites is that the others tend to be filled with rich world voices, leaving out the voices of people in the global south actually experiencing its dire consequences. OneClimate.net brings these essential voices into the global conversation.

  • Tiki the Enviro-Penguin

OneWorld Tiki
OneWorld Tiki

Tiki is the world's first Enviro-Penguin. He reveals the mess people have made of our planet and suggests how kids can make things better for everyone. His pages are really for kids (especially those aged 7-12) but adults are allowed in too. In fact, these are among the best-loved of all of OneWorld's pages, and have won more awards than anything else we've ever done! If you have a look, you'll discover a world of accessible information in Tiki's guides - e.g. to global warming, sustainablility, pollution. You can even take a fantastic journey with Tiki back to the beginning of time on his Time Machine.

  • Global Daily News

OWUK NEWS
OWUK NEWS

One of our aims at OneWorld is to bring citizens everywhere the kinds of news, features and analysis that will motivate us all to act in solidarity for a fairer world. For how can most citizens in richer societies even begin to know what the real lives of most people in the global south are like, when most mainstream media provide them such a limited and distorted view? We help redress the balance - with daily news and information that bypass the celebs and spin-doctors to go straight to the realities of life for the majority of the world's people.
